Fort Island

A small island in the Essequibo River that once served as the capital of the Dutch colony of Essequibo. The ruins of Fort Zeelandia (1743), a Dutch Reformed church, and a cemetery tell the story of Guyana's colonial past. Accessible by boat from Bartica.
