Wayne Braithwaite, born on 9 August 1975 in Georgetown, Guyana, is a former professional boxer who held the WBC cruiserweight title from 2002 to 2005. Nicknamed "Big Truck" for his relentless, come-forward fighting style, Braithwaite became the second Guyanese boxer to win a professional world title.
Braithwaite won a gold medal at the 1994 Junior Pan American boxing championships in Venezuela before turning professional in 1996, winning his debut via knockout over Olympian John Douglas. In 2002, he captured the WBC cruiserweight title and held it for three years, defending it successfully before losing to Jean-Marc Mormeck in 2005. He compiled a professional record of 24 wins (20 by knockout) and 6 losses in 30 fights, competing from 1997 to 2012.
A southpaw like Lewis, Braithwaite was known for his punching power and aggressive style.
Braithwaite's world title reign cemented Guyana's reputation as a nation capable of producing world-class boxers. Along with Andrew Lewis, he demonstrated that Guyanese fighters could compete at the highest levels of the sport.
