Terry Vivekanand Gajraj was born in the village of Fyrish, near the Corentyne River in Guyana. He is the eldest of three children and the son of a school teacher.
Gajraj began performing at the age of five with the Dil Bahar Orchestra, learning harmonium and drums. He went on to play with groups including the Star Rhythm Combo, the Original Pioneers, and the Melody Makers. After working as a high school teacher in Georgetown, he relocated to New York in the late 1980s to pursue music full-time. Inspired by Sundar Popo and the growing popularity of chutney music, Gajraj developed his own style blending chutney with soca. He has released numerous albums and is known by the nickname "D' Guyana Baboo".
Gajraj is a Hindu of Indian descent. He maintains a connection to his Berbice roots while being based in the United States.
Gajraj is widely regarded as one of the leading chutney-soca artists from Guyana. His music has a devoted following across the Caribbean and within the diaspora communities of North America. He has been active in the music industry since 1989.
