1921 — 13 May 2012
Philip Alfonso Moore was a self-taught Guyanese sculptor and painter, born in 1921.
Moore is best known for designing and creating the 1763 Monument, a 15-foot bronze sculpture that stands in the Square of the Revolution in Georgetown. The monument, unveiled on 23 May 1976 to mark Guyana's tenth anniversary of independence, honours the 1763 Berbice slave rebellion led by Cuffy. Moore described himself as a spirit-trained artist, and his work was deeply rooted in African and Guyanese spiritual traditions.
Moore passed away on 13 May 2012. The 1763 Monument remains one of the most recognisable public artworks in Guyana and a powerful symbol of resistance and national identity.
