Jan Rynveld Carew was born on 24 September 1920 in Agricola village, British Guiana. He attended Berbice High School before pursuing higher education internationally.
Carew studied at Howard University, Western Reserve University, Charles University in Prague, and the Sorbonne in Paris, where he earned a master's degree. He was a novelist, playwright, poet, and educator who lived and worked across the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, and North America. His notable novels include Black Midas and The Wild Coast, both published in 1958. He held academic positions at several universities and was deeply involved in Pan-African intellectual movements.
Carew was married three times. His daughter from his first marriage was the writer Lisa St Aubin de Teran.
Carew passed away on 6 December 2012 in Louisville, Kentucky, at the age of 92. His body of work spans fiction, children's literature, and political writing, reflecting a life spent engaging with questions of colonialism, identity, and liberation across multiple continents.
