George Simon was born on 23 April 1947 and was a Guyanese artist and archaeologist of Lokono Arawak heritage.
Simon founded and mentored the Lokono Artists Group, which promoted indigenous Guyanese art. His paintings drew on Lokono cosmology, colour traditions, and the rich heritage of Guyana's indigenous peoples. He was also an archaeologist who made significant discoveries, contributing to the understanding of pre-Columbian cultures in Guyana. He received the ANSA Caribbean Award for his work.
Simon passed away on 15 July 2020. He is remembered as a central figure in preserving and elevating indigenous Guyanese artistic traditions, bridging archaeology and visual art to tell the story of the Lokono people.
