Eusi Kwayana, born Sydney Evanson King on 4 April 1925 in Lusignan, British Guiana, is a Guyanese politician, activist, and playwright.
Kwayana became a primary school teacher at the age of 15. He served as a cabinet minister in the People's Progressive Party government of 1953, and was detained by the British Army in 1954. He later left the PPP and founded ASCRIA (African Society for Cultural Relations with Independent Africa), a Pan-Africanist grassroots political group. He subsequently became a founding member of the Working People's Alliance alongside Walter Rodney. He also founded County High School in 1956.
Kwayana has been a lifelong advocate for racial cooperation and social justice in Guyana. He changed his name from Sydney King to Eusi Kwayana as an expression of African identity. At over 100 years of age, he remains one of the most respected elder statesmen in Guyanese public life.
