Dave Martins was a Guyanese musician, songwriter, and cultural icon. He hailed from the West Demerara region of Guyana and attended St. Stanislaus College in Georgetown.
Martins founded and led Dave Martins and the Tradewinds, a band that became one of the most beloved musical acts in the Caribbean. Their song "Not a Blade of Grass" became an unofficial national anthem for Guyana, expressing the country's resolve over its territorial integrity. The band produced numerous popular songs that resonated across the Caribbean diaspora.
Martins was deeply connected to Guyanese culture and identity. He was known for his wit, storytelling, and pride in his West Demerara roots.
Martins received an honorary doctorate from the University of Guyana in recognition of his cultural contributions. Upon his passing on 18 August 2024, he was mourned as a true son of the soil by the nation, with President Irfaan Ali and many others paying tribute to his enduring legacy.
