— 13 October 1834
Damon was an enslaved African in British Guiana who became a leader in the struggle against slavery.
Damon led an uprising in 1834, shortly after the Abolition of Slavery Act had been passed but before full emancipation had taken effect. He was referred to as the "Captain" and "ringleader" of the unrest. The rebellion was suppressed by colonial authorities.
At noon on 13 October 1834, Damon was publicly hanged for rebellion. He is remembered as a freedom fighter who resisted enslavement and colonial oppression. His sacrifice is part of the broader history of resistance by enslaved Africans in Guyana.
