8 May 1926 — 27 April 1990
Aubrey Williams was born on 8 May 1926 in Georgetown, British Guiana.
Williams travelled to London from Guyana in 1952 and became one of the most significant Caribbean artists working in Britain. He was best known for his large oil-on-canvas paintings, which combined elements of pre-Columbian Amerindian art with modern abstract expressionism. His work was influenced by his time spent living among the Warao people in the interior of Guyana. He exhibited widely in Europe and the Americas throughout his career.
Williams passed away on 27 April 1990. His work is held in major collections internationally, including the Tate Gallery in London. He is recognised as a pioneering figure in Caribbean visual art who brought indigenous Guyanese visual traditions into dialogue with the international art world.
