Arthur Raymond Chung was born on 10 January 1918 in Windsor Forest, British Guiana, to a family of Chinese heritage.
Chung studied law and was called to the Bar at Middle Temple in London. He returned to Guyana and built a career in the legal profession. On 17 March 1970, he became the first President of Guyana when the country transitioned from a constitutional monarchy to a republic. He served as president until 6 October 1980. He made history as the first person of ethnic Chinese descent to serve as head of state of a non-Asian country.
Chung was honoured with the Order of Excellence, Guyana's highest national honour. He is buried at the Guyana Botanical Gardens. He passed away on 23 June 2008 in Georgetown at the age of 90.
