14 December 1970 — 4 May 2015
Andrew Lewis, born on 14 December 1970 in Georgetown, Guyana, was a professional boxer who became the first Guyanese to win a major world boxing title. Known by his nickname "Sixhead", Lewis was a southpaw with devastating knockout power who captured the hearts of the nation.
Lewis competed in the men's welterweight event at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona before turning professional in 1993. He won a gold medal at the 1990 Central American and Caribbean Games in Mexico City. In 2001, Lewis defeated James Page to capture the vacant WBA World Welterweight Title, becoming the first Guyanese world boxing champion — an achievement so momentous that a national holiday was declared in his honour. His exciting style and two-fisted power made him a popular fighter on HBO. He finished his professional career with a record of 23 wins (20 by knockout), 4 losses, and 2 draws in 30 fights.
Lewis was a national hero whose achievement inspired a generation of Guyanese boxers, including Keevin Allicock who continues to carry the flag at international level.
Lewis's world title victory in 2001 remains one of the proudest moments in Guyanese sporting history. He proved that a fighter from a small South American nation could compete and triumph on the world stage. He passed away on 4 May 2015 at the age of 44.
