“First female president — 46 years in Parliament”
Janet Jagan (1920–2009) co-founded the People's Progressive Party alongside her husband Cheddi in 1950 and served 46 years in Parliament — the longest-serving member in Guyanese history. Born in Chicago to Jewish parents, she became Guyana's first female president in 1997 and its first American-born head of state. She received the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Gold Medal in 1998.
