“Father of the Nation”
Cheddi Jagan (1918–1997) is regarded as the "Father of the Nation." Born on a sugar plantation in Port Mourant to Indo-Guyanese indentured worker parents, he studied dentistry in the USA, returned home, and co-founded the People's Progressive Party in 1950. He became the first popularly elected Prime Minister of British Guiana in 1953, and later served as President from 1992 until his death in 1997.
